How to highlight your skills
How to Use the STAR Method on CVs and Interviews
What is the STAR Method?
The STAR method is a structured way of responding to behavioural-based interview questions by discussing the Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It’s a useful technique to showcase your skills and experience effectively in both your CV and during interviews.
Why Use the STAR Method?
Using the STAR method helps you provide clear and concise examples of your abilities. It allows employers to understand how you’ve handled situations in the past, making it easier for them to assess your suitability for the role.
Using the STAR Method in Your CV
When writing your CV, you can use the STAR method to highlight your achievements in the work experience section. Here’s how:
Situation
Describe the context within which you performed a task or faced a challenge at work. This should be a brief introduction to set the scene.
Example: “While working as a customer service assistant at XYZ Retail…”
Task
Explain the actual task or challenge that was involved. This gives the reader an idea of what you were dealing with.
Example: “…I was responsible for improving the customer complaint resolution process…”
Action
Detail the specific actions you took to address the task or challenge. This should focus on what you did, how you did it, and why.
Example: “…I developed a new tracking system for complaints and trained staff on effective resolution techniques…”
Result
Share the outcomes of your actions. Quantify these results if possible to show the impact of your work.
Example: “…which led to a 30% reduction in customer complaints and a 20% increase in customer satisfaction ratings over six months.”
Example of STAR Method in CV
Customer Service Assistant, XYZ Retail
- Improved the customer complaint resolution process by developing a new tracking system (Situation and Task)
- Trained staff on effective resolution techniques (Action)
- Resulted in a 30% reduction in complaints and a 20% increase in satisfaction ratings over six months (Result)
Using the STAR Method in Interviews
When answering interview questions, particularly those asking for examples of past behaviour (e.g., “Tell me about a time when…”), the STAR method provides a clear structure to your responses.
Situation
Start by describing the situation to give context to your story.
Example: “In my previous role as a sales associate, we faced a significant drop in customer engagement…”
Task
Explain the task you were responsible for in that situation.
Example: “…and I was tasked with developing a strategy to re-engage our customers…”
Action
Describe the specific actions you took to complete the task or address the challenge.
Example: “…I initiated a personalised email campaign and organised in-store events to reconnect with our customers…”
Result
Share the results of your actions, focusing on what you achieved.
Example: “…which led to a 25% increase in customer visits and a 15% boost in sales over three months.”
Example Interview Answer Using STAR
Interviewer: “Can you tell me about a time when you improved a process?”
Candidate: “In my previous role as a sales associate, we faced a significant drop in customer engagement (Situation). I was tasked with developing a strategy to re-engage our customers (Task). I initiated a personalised email campaign and organised in-store events to reconnect with our customers (Action), which led to a 25% increase in customer visits and a 15% boost in sales over three months (Result).”
